Let's be honest, being an intern is not the most glamorous job in the entire world but depending on your attitude/dedication throughout the process it can be very beneficial to your future. There are some tricks to make it the best experience of your life and set yourself up for the unimaginable. The trick is proving to your company that this is the best thing that has happened to you (because hello..IT PROBABLY IS) and you are the best thing that could happen to them. It is all about showing them that you are able to contribute to their company and standing out from any intern they have ever seen before...
Here is some of the best advice that I got during two of my dream internships that helped me land my DREAM JOB!
1.Walk with confidence
It is so important to walk with confidence because it shows other people that you believe in yourself. All eyes are on you to mess up during an internship but if you walk everywhere you go with a purpose and meaning (even if you have no idea what in the heck you are doing) it will make you stand out. However, it is crucial to not cross the line of being cocky...
2.Always be forward thinking
If you are always thinking of the next thing you can do to help someone else, you will be a super valuable asset to your host internship company. During any internship there will most likely be some downtime--this is your chance to go to a different department and see what you can do to help.
3.Have several people look at your resume
You should totally take advantage of the opportunity that is right in front of you. During your internship you are likely surrounded by people that have been exactly where you are now. It can be hard to get people to look at your resume--so when you do, you want it to be BOMB! It is important to have several people critique your resume in order to collectively make it the best it can be.
4.Make business cards
Although you may think this is soooooo old school...IT WORKS. It never hurts to leave people with a physical object that has all of your contact information on it. I wouldn't say that you have to spend a lot of money on these but make it something you always have on you during your job hunting process. I made mine with the site www.vistaprint.com but you can go to any Office Depot or Staples and they can help you as well.

This trick is seriously such a life saver!! The business card folder is a way to help you keep all of the business cards that you start to accumulate as you move from intern to employee in one place. I always like to write a note and the last date we talked with the person's business card to help me remember them. This comes in super handy when you go to follow up.

6.Remember, you DON'T know it all
This piece of advice is SO important not only in your internship but in how to be as a person. One of my all time favorite sayings is, "no one knows everything, but everyone know something." If you are constantly curious at improving and learning from others - you will go far!

7.Don't look at the clock
This piece of advice is so crucial. You should treat your internship as if it were your job because in reality it very well could be. Be sure that you are never the last one in the office or the first one to leave. It will be noticed and is most likely NOT the way you want to perceived.

I personally think that this is what attributed most to my success with my internships. This is when the golden rule comes into play. TREAT OTHERS THE WAY YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED - simple as that!

9.Write thank you notes
Anyone can send an e-mail or say the words, but if you want to stand out - take the time to go the extra mile. Send a thank you letter to anyone who helps you in any way.

10.Follow up! Never loose a valuable connection
Every connection that you make during your internship is very valuable. You must be sure to stay in touch with all of your connections because you really never know when they could be valuable to you again.
